Much of the Peter Mullan movie The Magdalene
Sisters was filmed around Dumfries and Galloway. Winner of the best movie award at the 2002 Venice Film Festival this controversial film deals with the mental and physical abuse of women at a Catholic Convent in Ireland during the 1960's. In a reversal of the trend to film Scotland set movies in Ireland, this Ireland set movie was filmed in Scotland.
